From our Netflix Queue to Yours...

Bill and I are rather entertainment deprived. We don't have cable, we hardly ever go to the movies, and well, we live in Blanding. So our main source of entertainment is getting DVDs through Netflix. But lately I've been having the hardest time finding anything I want to add to our Netflix queue. Seriously, none of the new releases sound appealing, and most of them are too trashy anyway. Sometimes we'll come across a good classic, or watch a TV series, but for the most part I'm stumped every time I try to figure out what DVD I want them to send next.

So my plea to all of you is, "Please send me some recommendations!" Old or new, comedy or drama, foreign or domestic, movie or TV show ... if it's something you like I want to hear it! Just leave a comment with your recommendation. In return, I went through my Netflix rental history and picked out some of our favorites. Maybe you'll find something you'll enjoy:

North and South
If you're a fan of BBC's Pride & Prejudice, I highly suggest you try North & South. It shows how the "other half" lived during that period in England. It's a very interesting story, as well as a great romance. Thanks to my dear friend and sister-in-law Shelli for introducing me to this one.

The Thin Man
This the first in the famous series of mysteries starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. The dialogue is incredibly witty and funny.

Sweet Land
This is a charming love story about a German mail order bride and the struggles she faces when she arrives in America.

My Favorite Wife
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Even though I've seen it many many times, it still makes me laugh.

Roman Holiday
Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Rome ... need I say more?

Lars and the Real Girl
When I first heard the plot of this movie I was immediately put off. I thought it would be really perverted and disgusting. But I kept hearing such good things about it that I thought I'd give it a try, and I'm so glad I did. Yes, it's a very odd movie, but the storyline and the characters are so incredible. And it's really not perverted at all, it's actually a very sweet story. On a related note, Ryan Gosling is a seriously talented actor.

Foyle's War
Bill and I are currently working our way through this series, which was another recommendation by Shelli (keep 'em coming Shells). It's about a police detective solving mysteries against the backdrop of WWII England. It's not exactly a fast-paced rip-roaring adventure, but the stories are intriguing and the characters are likable and real. History nerds like my husband will especially like this one.

OK, now it's your turn ... what movies do I need to see?

One of my favorite movies is the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice it is like 6 hours long, but oh so good. Doug's picks would have to be the 80's classics such as better off dead, sixteen candels, goonies or anything with Adam Sandler. Good luck!

Kristin - I too love BBC's P&P. I own it and watch it at least once a year (or whenever I have six hours to kill!). Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy = perfection.

We have had the same problem with our Netflix Queue! There is just not much out right now. We have enjoyed Dan In Real Life, Breach, Timeline, and Paycheck. We love Alias and Lost (TV). I am not sure if they are your thing and there is some language in most of them, but maybe it will give you a start. I am excited to try some of your recomendations!

Have you and Bill ever seen the black and white version of "12 Angry Men."? Fantastic! Bob and I both love it. I'll try to think of others. I'm so glad you like Foyle's War!

I'm glad you're doing this! I need ideas too! We just watched "The God's Must be crazy", and "The Holiday" - romantic cutesy, but takes awhile to get into the plot. We really liked "Dan in Real Life" and classics that I love: "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", "Zoolander" (not really a classic." I'm checking back for more ideas!!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I wanted to add a recommendation my mom sent through email (mom, you can make comments here too!). She recommended "The Visitor." I'd never even heard of it, but I'll definitely check it out.

Hey Megan, it's Sarah Ercanbrack Parker. I just found your blog through Robyn's (of course), and after reading this post, I have to comment. Have you ever delved into the world of doc/mockumentaries? There are some really intertaining ones. I loved "My Kid Could Paint That," and "Gates of Heaven." I have heard that "Your Friendly Neighborhood Hero" is hilarious. I know, nerdy, but they are so entertaining! I hope you guys are well. It's fun to see your blog.

I'm afraid we're not much help. Alan got Netflix purely to relive his childhood and expose our kids to all of his old favorite cartoons. So we've seen all 36 (or so) discs of the Thundercats, lots of Superfriends and other fine movies.

Well Bruce and I thought of some of the most recent ones we've seen and really enjoyed. One of our new favorite films is The Heiress-a great lesson in how careful we need to be about what we say to our children. It stars Olivia de Havilland and she got an academy award for best actress-you'll see why! Wives and Daughters is one I watch yearly. It's based on a book by Elizabeth Gaskell. (Her last because she died before it was almost completed.)She also wrote North and South. The Moonstone and The Women in White both based on books by Wilkie Collins. I liked the Moonstone best, but The Women in White was quite well done too.
Hope this helps. Love Ya, Becky
