Our Pioneer Day celebration was capped off with the ultimate in red-neck revelry – the Fairview Demolition Derby. Those who have never experienced the insanity of the Fairview Derby are truly missing out. Because tickets to the derby are hard to come by (seriously, it sells out fast…thanks to my dad for scoring the tix) Bill and I left the kids with Grandma and Grandpa Measom and joined various members of the Measom family for some good old-fashioned car crashing fun. Of course we couldn’t just sit and watch the cars bash into each other. Per tradition, there was a fair amount of wagering going on. For each heat, those who wanted to participate would bet one dollar on their car of choice and the winner would take the pot. Somehow I ended up being in charge of the bets and the money and it was quite the organizational challenge. I don’t think I’m cut of to be a bookie! At one point we even had a guy in the row in front of us joining in the wagering (granted, he happened to be an acquaintance of my brother, but still...). Anyway, as usual the demolition derby was a lot of fun. The derby was followed by a fireworks show, then we headed back to Kent and Connie’s for the night. The house was packed full so our family took over the apartment down in the garage, with all three kids sharing a mattress on the floor. They actually thought that was a fun adventure.

I know this isn't the best picture, but it shows a bit of what the demolition derby was like.
Bill and Kent woke up early on Friday and headed back to Marnie’s to work on the deck. They stayed there until Saturday afternoon and were able to get the majority of the deck building done, although the decking still needs to be laid (sorry dad, you’re on your own for that!). While Bill was off slaving away on the deck I was lounging around at my parents, shopping with my mom, hanging out with Tassma, and generally being lazy. Finally on Saturday evening the time came to return to Blanding, along with a van full of tools, shopping bags, suitcases, and even an extra child (since my niece Reese came home with us for a visit). It was a busy week, with lots of shuttling around from here to there, but we had a good time and particularly enjoyed the time we spent with so many different family members.

The kids love playing in Grandpa Measom's hot tub!
