"Mom, nature's cool!"

Last Thursday we packed up a spur-of-the-moment picnic and headed to a nearby picnic and hiking area. It’s a desert-type area with lots of cool rocks to climb on, which the kids totally loved (although they weren’t crazy about all the cactus plants).

There was also a little pool of standing water that was teeming with tadpoles and tiny frogs. Naturally that was a huge attraction. We filled up a water bottle with the little creatures and watched in disgust as the tadpoles started eating the little frogs. It wasn’t long before we dumped them all back in the water!

The kids did a great job hiking along the trails and rocks. We were especially amazed at what a strong little hiker Joshua is. He was running along the trails and climbing the rocks with such ease we could barely keep up with him. We also saw a bunch of lizards and rabbits, but despite all his efforts Caleb couldn’t catch one. I think Amanda summed up the evening best when she looked up at me and said, “Mom, nature’s cool!”

having no babies is kind of a sad thing but the freedom and fun things you get to do with big kids is fun...we are justing starting to experience that, and you guys look like you are having so much fun. My boys would have totally dug seeing the tadpoles eat the frogs (did I get that right)?

Looks like a blast. I can't wait to take Jed places and show him all the "cool" things in nature. And some manmade stuff too, like Disneyland, the zoo, the aquarium. Ah, the field trips I have planned.
